BEAUTY UPDATE - ALL ABOUT SKIN TONERS

Hello everyone,

There is a question mark among girls when it comes to using a toner. We know that toning is an integral part of CTM, but do you actually know, what it does? Who is it for? Does price makes a difference? Here you will get all your answers...

By just looking at the long post, it may look scary but it is very important knowledge, so don't hesitate to read it. You'll enjoy it.

What are toners?
A skin toner is a liquid or light lotion that is used in several different applications of skin care. Of these, the most common is to use a toner, usually with witch hazel or alcohol to clean the skin and perhaps reduce oil on the skin and prevent acne breakouts. These are often called astringents.

Why toners?
Skin toner maintains the pH balance of the skin.

What is pH?
pH is the measurement of acidity.

Your skin needs a certain amount of oil to stay waterproof and resist infections. Too little can lead to dry skin and the premature development of wrinkles; too much can lead to oily skin and acne. The oil in your skin is called sebum and it’s produced by the sebaceous glands, tiny ducts that lie next to the hair follicles, this is called acid mantle.
This acid mantle keeps the pH of your skin at about 4 to 4.5 (Remember, low pH like 1 to 5 is acidic, high pH 8 or above is basic, and the middle, around 7, is neutral.) Anyway, this slightly acidic pH is a good thing on your skin because it helps ward off harmful bacteria.
When you wash your face, the face wash strips away acid mantle, but skin generates it itself after sometime.

Who is it for?
Toning is an essential step of skin care regimen. Until you have oily skin it can do more harm than good. It is essential for oily skin not for dry. Toners contain alcohol or witch hazel, both are drying in nature. So if you have oily skin, it can benefit you but if you have dry or sensitive skin, it will make your skin dry and irritated.

Still if you feel that you need a toner and you have dry and or sensitive skin then, find a soothing alcohol / witch hazel free toner with chamomile.

Does toner tighten pores?
Well, this is debatable. Experts claim that toners tighten the pores thus environmental impurities and pollution doesn't penetrate in to skin. But there are other options too, you can tighten your skin and pores by few remedies. Cold tightens pores. Rub ice on your face or if it cool weather step outside and pat your skin. This will also work as toners. Or you can use polyphenols in green tea and caffeine also help in reducing puffiness around eyes and tighten the pores. Frozen green tea after facewash is a great toner. Don't overdo it may cause rosacea.

Does price make a difference?
There is no difference in pH between expensive products or drugstore products.

Final tip
If you have oily combination skin, you need toner only on oily part, not all over the face. The dry part or normal part will become drier. Its better that you use alcohol free with chamomile toner.
If you have oily skin, its a must for you.

I hope now your concept about toners is clear. If you have any doubts feel free to ask me. I am happy to help.
